Bring one of these easy-to-make dishes to your next potluck. Everyone’s heart will thank you!
Is your summer filled with get-togethers where everyone is asked to bring a dish? Whether you’re trying to follow a heart-healthy diet, keep your blood pressure in check or simply consume less salt, finding dishes that taste good, are low in sodium and feed a crowd may sound a bit daunting.
But luckily there are plenty of tasty, party-friendly low sodium recipes you can make that are absolutely delicious. Just focus on fresh ingredients and creative seasonings instead of relying on processed foods and sauces and you’ll find it’s pretty easy to put together potluck dishes everyone will love that are also heart-smart.
Here are five low sodium potluck ideas that are easy to prep, taste delicious and feed a crowd. Not only will they draw rave reviews but other guests will benefit from their low sodium content as much as you will:
- Kebabs – Just cube some chicken or beef or add shrimp to skewers along with a bunch of veggies, such as peppers, onions, mushrooms and tomatoes. Adding pineapple is also a nice touch. Brush with olive oil, lemon, garlic and some fresh herbs like basil or rosemary. Then either grill at home and serve at room temp or bring the skewers uncooked if the party’s host is willing to grill them.
- Build-Your-Own – Bring the fixings for make-your-own tacos or lettuce wraps. You can offer grilled chicken or seasoned ground turkey, beef or beans (but don’t use the taco seasoning mix packets because most are loaded with sodium). Put fresh toppings in bowls, such as avocado, chopped tomato, diced onion or slaw and provide taco shells, tortillas or lettuce leaves. Making a fresh salsa is a low-sodium option compared to jarred sauces.
- Pasta Salads – Classic pasta salads are potluck favorites but they can be full of sodium if you’re not careful. Ingredients such as cheese, cold cuts, olives or bottled dressing can really up the salt content. But there’s no need to skip this summer favorite if you take steps to bring down the sodium. Start with whole grain pasta, add lots of fresh colorful veggies and make your own dressing with olive oil, garlic and some fresh basil or dill.
- Bean Dishes – Whether you’re a fan of hearty bean salads or creamy bean dips, there are easy ways to bring down sodium levels. Start with no-salt-added canned beans or cook up some dry beans in advance. If you use regular canned beans, drain and rinse thoroughly to remove most of the salt. Combine beans with diced tomatoes, corn, onion, lime juice and cilantro for a quick salsa. Or mash to make a dip or hummus.
- Fruit Desserts – Bringing a platter of fresh fruit or a fruit salad is always a crowd-pleaser at a summer get-together and fruit is naturally low in sodium. You can also add cubed fruit to skewers to make kebabs which are fun and festive. A dip made from Greek yogurt is a welcome addition.
These potluck ideas are proof that simple, fresh ingredients can be crowd-pleasers while also being healthier and good for your heart.
