Birthday parties can be expensive, especially if they are held at venues such as a bowling alley or trampoline park. Once you purchase a party package, cake, decorations, goodie bags and everything else that comes with it, you could be spending $500 or more to mark that special occasion.
Instead of hosting a traditional birthday party, there are many alternatives you can consider. For instance, you could consider treating your child to a self-care day or an experience like a concert or sporting event. While young children will likely enjoy a birthday bash more than a special outing, older children like teenagers might like seeing a show or another memorable experience even more.
Birthday dinners are also very popular. Perhaps there’s a new restaurant they’ve been wanting to visit, or if you are confident in your cooking skills, make them a special meal at home. Seafood, steak and other foods not typically eaten day-to-day could be a good idea.
More Canadians households also own projectors and screens. You might want to consider hosting a movie night and making popcorn or other tasty snacks at home. With the price of going out for a movie nowadays, you can bring that experience into the comfort of your own home for a fraction of the cost.
If a birthday is held during the warmer months in spring, summer and fall, consider hosting a party at a local beach or campground. There is no cost to those venues, unless of course you want to splurge a little and rent a beach cabana.
Other ideas you might want to consider are a one-night birthday trip to another town, a day out for shopping, a game night or baking day.
While birthday parties are fun, don’t be scared to think outside the box! It just might start a new birthday tradition!
