If there’s one activity Canadians enjoy during the summer months, it’s spending time at the beach! Whether that beach is along a lake, river, or ocean, there are some things to remember to ensure everyone has a safe, but also fun time!

Check the local forecast so you can be ready for whatever the weather brings. If it is going to be a rather hot and sunny day, don’t forget to pack sunburn lotion and even a large umbrella to protect yourself from the sun’s rays. Sunburn is a common occurrence in the summer and the painful skin condition can last days to weeks depending on the severity.

It’s very important to bring drinks such as water to prevent dehydration. Dehydration is when you lose more fluid than you take in. Dehydration can lead to dizziness, fainting and low blood pressure, which may put older adults at risk for falls.

Beach towels and toys are also items you might want to consider packing. Towels are needed if you plan on getting into the water, and beach toys like inflatable tubes and balls add just a little more excitement for all those involved.

Foldable chairs and a portable barbecue can be a good additions to your outing. Chairs will keep you off the ground and a barbecue will allow you to cook summer time favourites like hamburgers or hotdogs.

Don’t forget to bring a little bit of money to buy some tasty treats. Ice cream is commonly sold at beaches across Canada, as well as cold drinks, potato chips, chocolate bars and various types of candy.

A portable speaker or earbuds are also a good way to increase the fun you have while at the beach. Listen to your favourite songs or podcast while relaxing in the sand.

When at the beach, remember safety comes first! Children and those who are not strong swimmers should wear lifejackets and an adult should be supervising those in the water at all times. Look out for one another and everyone will have a safe and fun day at the beach!
