As Christmas approaches, festive music begins to fill the airwaves. There are some songs that might annoy you, but there are others you could listen to again and again! Everything Lifestyle reached out to Canadians about their favourite Christmas song or carol, and these were named the most popular.
Blue Christmas (1957) – Elvis
At the top of the list is a song by the King of Rock and Roll himself. This song is about the sadness and loneliness of spending the holidays without a loved one. The lyrics describe how decorations and traditions feel empty without that special person, creating a "blue" Christmas for the singer. This song was covered by the character Porky Pig in 1985.
Happy Xmas (War Is Over) (1971) - John Lennon and Yoko Ono and the Plastic Ono Band with the Harlem Community Choir
This song is about peace, personal responsibility, and hope, especially during the holiday season. The song was written during the Vietnam War when Lennon and Ono were protesting war and violence, saying that war continues because people accept it.
Little Drummer Boy (1941) – Multiple Covers
A beloved classic for many, this song had many covers over the years by the likes of Bing Crosby and Bob Seger. It was written by Katherine Kennicott Davis in 1941 and it was originally titled Carol of the Drum. It was popularized during the 1950s.
The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don’t be Late) (1959) - Alvin and the Chipmunks
This song is a playful Christmas novelty song where Alvin, Simon, and Theodore excitedly ask Dave to hurry Christmas along so they can get their presents. Alvin’s impatience causes humorous interruptions, while Simon and Theodore try to keep things calm. The song is known for its high-pitched vocals, catchy tune, and lighthearted holiday humour.
White Christmas (1942) – Bing Cosby
This song was written by Irving Berlin in 1942. It went on to win the Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 15th annual Academy Awards in 1943. Since then, there has been many covers of the song, notably by Burl Ives.
