Dirty sodas are becoming the hottest new beverage in Canada.

Dirty sodas begin with a base with popular options being colas, lemon-lime, root beer and pepper sodas. Flavoured syrups are then added, along with creamer or half-and-half, and sometimes fruit juice or purees. Don’t forget the ice!

The beverage originated in the early 2010s among the Mormon communities in the United States, who don’t consume caffeinated beverages such as coffee and tea.

Dirty sodas really began taking off in Western Canada in late 2025. Interest in the new drink has been linked to Hulu hit television series Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, as well as viral videos on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok.

The drink has become popular because of its high degree of customization, it’s sweeter and richer than regular soda, and it’s a non-coffee alternative for those who want a special treat.

You can try making one at home by first filling a glass with ice, adding your pop of choice, mixing in one or two tablespoon (or to your liking) of flavour syrups, and then finally a splash of cream. Stir gently!
