The 5-4-3-2-1 method of grocery shopping is trending. Now is a good time to try it out.
The 5-4-3-2-1 method is five vegetables, four fruits, three proteins, two grains and a treat. This method is intended to create more ways to make grocery shopping more affordable and maximize your meal situation.
Some of the most common vegetables grown in Canada are potatoes, carrots, onions, tomatoes, cabbage, and sweet corn. These vegetables, along with turnips, are also among the most affordable.
When it comes to fruit, bananas are an affordable option that pack well when taken on the go or in a child’s lunch bag. Apples and oranges can be bought by the bag, usually on sale, and grapes and strawberries are very popular across the country.
In regards to protein, eggs are a great addition as they have a low cost and can be used in many dishes. Canned meat is also a good option as they have a long shelf life and come in a variety of proteins such as beef, chicken and fish.
When it comes to grains, quinoa is growing in popularity. Use it as a base for salads, grain bowls, breakfast porridge, or as a high-protein substitute for rice, pasta, or couscous. And who doesn’t like bread! Bread comes in a large assortment of types and even flavours.
Finally, the sky is the limit when it comes to the treat. Perhaps you are more of a salty person who likes chips, or if you lean more towards sweets, chocolate is a favourite for many Canadians.
Happy shopping!
