Summer is the perfect time to disconnect from tech so you have more time to relax and enjoy.

Many people spend a lot of time staring at screens. From phones and watches to laptops and tablets, technology is very much a part of our day and makes our lives easier in many ways. It helps us stay connected and gives us seemingly instant access to information. But being plugged in can also take a toll on our mental and physical health, which is why taking a break on occasion is beneficial.

The act of disconnecting from technology is sometimes referred to as a digital detox. This makes it sound like it has to be a grand gesture. But relying less on your phone, tablet or laptop at times doesn’t have to be a big event. All you need to do is spend less time looking at your phone or other tech and more time talking to people, enjoying nature and finding joy in the wonders of life.

Since it can be hard or impossible to disconnect from all digital resources when working, summer vacation is the perfect time to unplug. Whether traveling, visiting family or enjoying a quiet weekend, it’s easier to set the phone aside and enjoy what’s around you. Go for a walk, read a book, head to the beach, play a game of catch with your kids, have a conversation with a friend or try a new hobby.

Taking a screen break, even for short periods, helps clear mental clutter. This can lead to benefits such as feeling more alert and productive, as well as less anxious and distracted. You may sleep better and your mood may even improve. You’ll likely also experience physical benefits. From reduced eye strain and headaches to less back, neck and wrist pain, your body will thank you for the screen break. And if you replace screen time with physical activity, your body will especially reap the benefits.

You’ll also likely find that a digital detox gives you a chance to reconnect with things that are important and meaningful in your life. Without constant notifications vying for your attention, you may find yourself feeling more connected to the people you’re with and might notice things you’ve been too distracted to appreciate. You’ll also have more time to do things you enjoy.

If stepping away from all screens seems more stressful than helpful, rest assured that you don’t need to be completely offline to experience benefits. Even small changes to your digital habits can make a difference. Make meals a phone-free time. Or commit to taking a walk before being able to aimlessly scroll on social media. Or plan an active vacation where you’ll be so busy that there’s not much time for checking your phone, tablet or laptop for the latest news or watching mindless videos.

Summer vacation offers the perfect excuse to slow down, unplug and focus on things you enjoy. By spending less time looking at screens and more time being in the moment, you’ll make the most of your time off and may even develop some screen-free habits that can carry you through the rest of the year.
