Today marks one of the most important holidays in Asian culture: Lunar New Year.
Lunar New Year is usually celebrated between Jan. 21 and Feb. 20, depending on the first new moon of the lunar year. This year it lands on Feb. 17.
Each year is associated with one of 12 zodiac animals in the Chinese zodiac cycle with 2026 being the Year of the Fire Horse. Online sources state the year represents expansion, recognition and well-earned progress. It is meant to symbolize freedom and energy.
The last time the Year of the Fire Horse was celebrated was in 1966.
Common traditions on Lunar New Year include family reunions and big meals, fireworks, dragon and lion dances, honouring ancestors, and gifting red envelopes with money.
As of the 2021 Canadian census, more than seven million people reported an Asian origin in the country.
