Christmas for Canadians is a time of the year when families and friends come together, and there’s many activities to keep everyone busy.
Exploring your community to gaze at Christmas lights is a time honoured tradition. There is almost no better way to invoke that Christmas spirit than travelling street to street to admire lights in colours such as red, green and white. Some communities host dazzling displays of lights as part of fundraisers, while many others keep a public registry of the most decorated homes in your town or city.
Baking is another favourite pastime for Canadians during the holidays. Some people enjoy baking fruit cake or ginger breads cookies, while others take the time to bake homemade buns, breads and even cinnamon rolls. If you and a group of friends are up for it, have everyone bake their favourite treat and then come together to trade amongst each other. This way you can enjoy a variety of baked goods without spending many hours in the kitchen.
What would Christmas be without the parties? Whether it’s with friends or colleagues, parties are a great way to bring people together to unwind. Hosting a party is a good way to let people know they matter and what’s a better way to do so than with a good meal and perhaps a drink or two. If alcohol is served, make sure your guests drink responsibly and everyone has a safe ride home.
While temperatures in Canada at Christmas can be rather cold, the holidays are an ideal time spend outdoors. Canada has been known to be a winter wonderland as most regions in the country experience an abundance of snow. Perhaps think about hitting up the neighbourhood skating rink, taking the kids to a nearby hill for some sledding or even staying in your own yard and building a snowman. The ideas are endless.
What would the holiday season be without a little bit of shopping? A trip to any mall or shopping centre in December will demonstrate just how popular shopping is in the lead up to Christmas. Maybe there’s a last-minute gift you need to buy or perhaps you need ingredients for your Christmas dinner. Don’t shy away from the crowds as you never know who you might bump into and what kind of deal you'll find.
