My buddy JP gave me a bunch of rusted cast iron pans that had been sitting in a sea can at a scout camp for years.

Time to get them to almost like-new again by brushing off all that rust.

All the pans got a generous coating of oven cleaner, and they hung out in plastic bag for three days. With some steel wool and elbow grease, all that excess carbon came right off.

It was now time to season the cast iron pans by putting on a fine layer of oil into a hot barbecue – you could use an oven – and they were almost like new again.

What are the benefits?

Cast iron pans are known for their durability, versatility and ability to develop a non-stick surface. They have exceptional heat retention and distribution, making them proficient at searing, frying and baking.

Cooking with cast iron can also increase the level of iron in your food, which can be beneficial for those with deficiencies. The non-stick coating is useful when it comes to eliminating the need for adding fats and oils.

Cast iron pans are also easy to clean with proper seasoning and care. In addition, they have been known to enhance the flavour of foods.
