With only two weeks left until the official start to summer, residents of Western Canada will soon be on the move for family vacations, camping and road trips.

With all the excitement and last-minute details to arrange, it is easy to forget an item or two, or perhaps even overlook supplies you may need – just in case!

If you will be travelling in Western Canada, a good rule is to pack for temperatures about 10 to 15 C or colder, and wetter than what the forecast predicts as the weather can change quickly. Pack a warmer jacket for cool mornings and evenings, along with waterproof footwear or boots. A wind-resistant outer layer is also important, as well as an extra blanket in the vehicle.

There is also no shortage of mosquitoes and other insects in British Columbia and the Prairie Provinces. Consider packing bug spray, mosquito coils and other repellents to keep them away. One or two insects are easy to deal with, but too many can easily ruin the fun of an outing.

Safety is always important and should be a priority when travelling. You don’t want to get caught on a quiet road or highway with a flat tire with no spare or car jack. Ensure you have those items with you, along with other items like a First Aid kit, booster cables, a tow rope, basic tool kit, and flashlight. There is no such thing as being too prepared!

Other essential items are snacks, drinks, and forms of entertainment. Water, trail mix, nuts, granola or protein bars, and crackers store well and have lengthy expiration dates. If you have enough space, consider bringing a cooler with juices, fresh fruits and vegetables, and even pre-made salads and sandwiches.

When it comes to entertainment, you can't go wrong with downloaded playlists or podcasts. Travel games can also come in handy, as well as a simple deck of cards or two. If you’re travelling with children, tablets and gaming devices are fine, but perhaps consider bringing a baseball, glove, bat, chalk, skipping ropes or other sporting gear to keep them active. Road trips are meant to spend time with one another, not with personal electronic devices.

Above and beyond, don’t forget to have fun! Creating a list before you travel can save you the headache and a couple dollars along the way, too.
