With winter in full swing and plenty of snow on the ground, it’s a great time to get outdoors and make the most of it. There are many fun activities you and your family can enjoy with all the snow, just don’t forget to dress appropriately and be sure to wear a good pair of mitts or gloves!
A favourite pastime of Canadians during the winter months is building a snowman. The warmer temperatures in Western Canada in recent days makes it an ideal time to build a snowman or even a snow family. Building a snowman is fairly simple as it involves minimal effort and supplies like tree branches, stones, and don’t forget the carrot nose.
Winter is an ideal time to make snow sculptures with the art form being showcased at large events such as SnowDays in Banff, Alta or even in your home community. This activity also includes minimal supplies such as saws and chisels, and the end result has endless possibilities. Some snow sculptures are of whimsical characters, while others are more realistic in nature. The sky is the limit!
Building a snow fort or igloo are also very common activities. This can be accomplished by forming a pile of snow, creating a doorway, and hallowing out the pile to create an interior room. If you decide to make a rather large snow fort, remember these types of structures can be unstable and there should be parental supervision if there's a risk of harm to children.
Other activities you might consider in the snow are snowshoeing, sledding or tubing, as well as skiing and snowboarding. Perhaps a snowball fight in your own yard is more fitting or even taking a minute or two to form a snow angel. Don't be afraid to get a little bit cold as it's all in good fun!
