With the price of gasoline at historic highs, what’s a better time to consider a staycation?

A staycation is when you stay in your own town, city or local area, instead of travelling long distances or faraway places. They surged in popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic and have remained popular ever since. Staycations are a way to relax and have fun without spending a large amount of time or money on travelling.

If you live in or around Edmonton, for example, consider booking a night or two at the West Edmonton Mall. It is North America’s largest shopping centre and it includes 800 stores and restaurants, 12 world-class attractions, and two hotels. There are also kid-friendly attractions such as a water park and amusement park.

Perhaps you want to get away with your significant other. Book a room at a hotel where is a spa or one close to nightlife experiences. Bring your date to a music venue or even a new or old restaurant you’ve been wanting to try.

Many communities are also close to national or provincial parks. Now is an ideal time to make an online reservation for a campsite, particularly if you want to stay during a weekend or holiday. Many parks even offer a glamping option, where you spend the night in a specialized tent, cabin, teepee or yurt.

If you are in southern British Columbia, some wineries offer lodging on site or close by. There are even options to go horseback riding or renting a boat to spend time on a nearby lake.

Just because the price of gas is high, doesn’t mean you or your family needs to sacrifice a well-deserved break.
