Canadian winters are known for being long, dark and cold.
According to the Government of Canada, winter storms and excessive cold claim over 100 lives each year in this country. Weather conditions can change quickly and become dangerous with little or no warning.
It’s important to dress warmly when you go outside during the winter months by wearing layers of clothing with a wind-resistant outer layer. Wear warm socks, mittens, a hat and scarf. In extremely cold conditions, cover as much exposed skin as possible. If you get wet, change into dry clothing.
Outdoor sports, such as skiing, snowmobiling and skating can be fun in the wintertime, but be sure to dress appropriately. Wear a facemask or goggles to protect your face from frostbite and windburn.
In prairie provinces such as Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan, the temperature often drops to -20 C or lower, and the wind chill can make it feel like –40 C. The weather in British Columbia is much milder with Vancouver often staying above 0 C and experiencing rain instead of snow.
There are several variations of winter jackets to choose from including parkas, bombers, coats made primarily from wool or wool-blend fabrics, and down jackets insulated with feathers or synthetic fill. Each variation protects you from certain ranges in temperatures, so make sure to know what you’re buying is suitable for the region in Canada you live.
