As we reflect on 2025 and move forward into 2026, millions of Canadians have made New Year’s resolutions with the goal of being better by making a personal commitment to improve oneself. Here are some of the top resolutions Canadians have made in hopes of a bigger and brighter new year.
Resolutions about personal growth are very popular. Perhaps that means creating better habits, being more outgoing or willing to try new things, or learning a new skill. Maybe you’ve always wanted to learn to play the guitar or piano? Maybe you want to read more books or save more money? Personal growth is a key to success!
Mental and emotional well-being resolutions are also common. Many people find they have been too hard on themselves and will aim to love themselves better. This might also include thinking about what makes you happy and what doesn’t, and either focusing on or getting rid of some aspects in your life. It is very important to be proud of oneself and to be proud of your actions that affect others.
Physical health is also a topic Canadians think about when making their New Year’s resolutions. Some people want to start eating better, some want to exercise more, and some want to give up unhealthy habits. At this time of year, many Canadians make a promise to themselves to drink less alcohol or perhaps reduce their consumption of sugary, fatty and highly processed foods.
Relationships and social life are other aspects Canadians will think about. It is normal to think about the people in your life and decide whether or not their presence is either positive or negative. It's also a good time to examine your social life and decide if you want to participate in new activities or tighten your bonds to community or family ties.
When making a New Year’s resolution, try keep those commitments realistic. Many resolutions fail because they are simply not achieveable. Making resolutions small, specific and actionable will increase the chances your resolution will be a success.
