Fish oil benefits include improved mood, stress reduction and joint pain relief.
Confused about fish oil? A recent study about a possible connection between fish oil and prostate cancer raised questions for a lot of people. The study suggested a higher risk of prostate cancer in men who consumed omega-3 fatty acids, such as those found in fatty fish and fish oil.
Yet other studies identify fish oil as having a protective factor.
Here’s what we do know: Solid research shows that the benefits of fish oil extend well beyond heart health, and include improved mood, stress reduction and joint pain relief. Look to fish and fish oil for any condition that signals inflammation in the body.
Here are some suggestions to help guide you in choosing which fish oil to purchase:
Food first: The American Heart Association recommends eating fatty fish at least twice a week for the general population; higher levels are recommended for those with high triglycerides. But be sure to avoid fish high in mercury, including shark, tilefish, and swordfish.
Sustainable: Look to the Seafood Watch Program at the Monterey Bay Aquarium to find the best sources of fish.
Supplements: If a supplement is warranted, use a quality brand such as Metagenics or Nordic Naturals. Work with a trusted pharmacy or your physician to find the right sources, dosing and brand to maximize benefit.
